The upcoming Powerfest on PartyPoker.com is set to be the biggest ever with a record 301 events and $20,000,000 in guaranteed prizes.

The series will run May 7-21, 2017, and will culminate with a massive $1,050 buy-in, $1m-guaranteed Main Event on the final day.

PartyPoker is celebrating the launch of Powerfest and its new rewards program by giving players 10% off Powerfest bundles in the loyalty store.

Pokerfest Tournament of Champions

This time around PartyPoker is offering a special Tournament of Champions freeroll for all 301 winners that come out of PowerFest.

John Duthie
PartyPoker Live president John Duthie.

Entry is free for all Powerfest winners with $20,000 in PartyPoker tickets up for grabs. First place will walk away with $15,000 in tickets and an official PowerFest t-shirt, trophy and belt.

The TOC won’t be the only perk for Powerfest grinders as the site is running a 500 Points to $500k tournament where users can put up 500 loyalty points to play in a satellite into the $2m-GTD Powerfest $25,500 buy-in Super High Roller Charity event.

If you don't want to play the massive event you can instead attempt to win a piece of Sam Trickett's action in the tournament by correctly answering PartyPoker questions on Twitter.

PartyPoker will pick out some accounts randomly and give away a percentage of Trickett's winnings in the tournament. It's completely free to enter.

Pokerfest will also offer a leaderboard with $135,000 in prizes for players looking to log a large amount of volume during the series.

As usual PowerFest will include four buy-in levels, starting at just $5.50 and rocketing all the way up to $25,500 for the Super High Roller Charity event. There will be leaderboard rewards for each buy-in level.

PartyPoker has been exceptionally busy lately with European poker legend John Duthie taking the reins as president of the site’s live tour and a brand-new loyalty program.

Ben “Sauce123” Sulsky Wins $111k in Rare High-Stakes Action

$

0

The high-stakes online games may have died down but that hasn’t kept Ben “Sauce123” Sulsky from winning the odd game that pops up.

Sulsky dominated the big $1k/$2k 8-game that ran on PokerStars yesterday. He bested Alexander “Joiso” Kostritsyn, Elior “Crazy Elior” Sion, Mongano and greezehool to the tune of $111,492, according to highstakesDB.

Sulsky actually played a mixture of $1k/$2k 8-game and 2-7 Triple Draw although he posted a small loss in the Triple Draw portion of the day.

It’s been an average year for Sulsky who’s “only” up $215k when in years past he’s been up millions by this point.

Ravenswood13 Still Online King

Ben Sulsky isn’t currently the biggest high-stakes winner of the year on PokerStars.

Carlo van Ravenswoud 3055
Carlo van Ravenswoud

That honor goes to Ravenswood13, rumored to be Carlo van Ravenswoud, who has amassed $667,187 in the big games on PokerStars.

The Ravenswood13 account has only been active on PokerStars since mid-2013 and went through a disastrous downswing in late 2015 that saw him lose over $1m.

Ravenswood13 has rebounded nicely over the last couple years, however, and with a strong 2017 that downswing will be a distant memory.

Right behind Ravenswood13 is Russian Timofey “Trueteller” Kuznetsov who is currently up $444,983.

Kuznetsov had a rough start to 2016 that saw him drop over $1m but like Ravenswood13, he’s been firmly on the upswing ever since and has rebounded nicely.

The Russian has also been quite successful on the live tournament circuit with nearly $3m in earnings with $2.1 million coming from a spectacular showing at the 2015 SHRB.

Rough Year for Dan “Jungleman” Cates

On the other end of the scale for 2017 is Dan “Jungleman” Cates, of the seemingly never-ending durrrr Challenge.

daniel cates 33
Dan "Jungleman12" Cates

Cates has been fairly active in the high-stakes games this year with 13,636 but he’s down $495k.

It wasn’t a great start to 2017 for Cates as he promptly lost half a million in the first two weeks of the year.

Cates did get some good news recently, however, as Absolute/UB started paying back players. Jungleman allegedly had a large sum on the site.

Some of the other players in tough this year include Dani “supernova9” Stern (-$485,135) and Bill “GASTRADER” Perkins who is down $396k. Might be time to put that stream boat in reverse.

Sick Three-Way All-In Bursts Bubble in 'Stars Millionaire Challenge

$

Russian online player nick2101983 is the newest millionaire on PokerStars but it's his heads-up opponent cuonglc who’s getting buzz for a stunning hand he played in the Millionaire Challenge earlier this week.

The Millionaire Challenge is a free promotional event on PokerStars where players completed various poker challenges and were then entered into daily qualifiers.

From the daily qualifiers a total of 42 players emerged for the Millionaire Challenge Final.

The payouts for the Challenge were particularly interesting as first place paid out $1m and second place took $30,000. Everyone else got zero.

That’s why the following hand by cuonglc took everyone by surprise.

cuonglc Busts Two to Lock Up $30k

Play in the Millionaire Challenge had gotten down to just four players remaining with nick2101983 the massive chip leader.

cash money

cuonglc found Q 7 on the button and decided to make a play by shoving all-in having both his opponents covered.

PokerRog found A 9 in the small blind and decided to call as did Nobody6799 with pocket sixes in the big blind.

The board ran out K 8 2 J 2 to give cuonglc the flush, knock out both players and lock up at least $30,000 for finishing in the final two.

The blockbuster hand also gave cuonglc a legit shot at taking down nick2101983 as the players were nearly even in chips by that point.

Alas it wasn’t to be for cuonglc as nick2101983 continued his strong play and eventually won the heads-up and secured the $1,000,000 first-place prize

You can check out the hand with commentary from PokerStars Team Online Pro Felix Schneiders via Twitch below:

More Millionaire Chances on PokerStars

If you missed out on the Millionaire Challenge but still want to win $1m there are some intriguing options coming up on PokerStars thanks to the 10 Millionaires in 10 Weeks promotion.

The Spring Championship of Online Poker Begins next week with two tournaments on the schedule that will pay out $1m for first place.

If you’re more into live poker than there’s also the PokerStars Championship Championship Monte Carlo, which is just getting started and will offer two tournaments with guaranteed $1m first-place prizes.

partypoker Adds MTT Master Dzmitry Urbanovich to Pro Roster

Polish MTT crusher Dzmitry Urbanovich is the newest poker pro on the partypoker team.

Urbanovich has been one of the most successful players on the live tournament circuit over the last few years with over $5m in live tournament earnings since 2013.

partypoker announced the signing earlier today and Urbanovich will join a team that already includes poker pros Mike Sexton, Johnny Lodden, Sam Trickett, Natalia Breviglieri and Tony Dunst.

Urbanovich #1 on All-Time Polish List

Dzmitry Urbanovich has been so successful over the last few years that he’s quickly ascended to the top of the all-time money earners leaderboard for Poland.

Urbanovich 2
Dzmitry Urbanovich

“I can’t wait to join the partypoker team,” he said.

“I have already played partypoker Million Sochi and MILLIONS and absolutely loved the events. There are so many great partypoker LIVE events that I’ll struggle to fit them all in. I am also planning my schedule around the $20,000,000 Powerfest that starts on May 7th, which I am sure will be a great success.”

Urbanovich is perhaps best known for his spectacular EPT Malta in 2015 where he won an astounding four tournaments including a €25k Super High Roller for €572,300.

The Polish pro went on to rightfully win EPT Player of the Year in 2015.

Last year Urbanovich added to this tournament success by taking down EPT Dublin for €561,900.

Unafraid to Take Risks

Urbanovich isn’t afraid to mix it up away from the tables and he was actually the first player to make a big 200-1 bracelet bet against Vanessa Selbst last year.

urbanovich
More bracelet bets this summer?

Urbanovich put up $10,000 on winning three bracelets at the 2016 WSOP but ultimately fell short cashing three times but missing out on a bracelet.

That bet paved the way for the even bigger Jason Mercier bet that got a considerable amount of attention last summer.

Urbanovich hasn’t said yet whether he’ll fire again on bracelet bets this summer but he’s going to be busy regardless over the next few months.

“It is a pleasure to have Dzmitry join the partypoker team as a sponsored pro,” said managing director of partypoker Tom Waters.

“I have watched his progress over the years and he is a great guy with some extremely impressive cashes Dzmitry is very positive about the game and is a perfect fit for partypoker. I look forward to seeing Dzmitry travel the partypoker LIVE circuit this year.”

Pick the Game in Upcoming Players’ Choice SCOOP Event

$

0

The latest edition of the Spring Championship of Online Poker is in full swing on PokerStars but it's the players who will get to decide what game gets played in an upcoming tournament.

Once again PokerStars has opted to set aside one tournament (this time its SCOOP-57 on May 22) as a “Players’ Choice” event.

That means players can choose from four games hand-picked by Team PokerStars Pro Online. Voting will take place on Facebook.

Its a marked change from the usual SCOOP schedule, which is set months before the online series even begins.

Staples, Veldhuis Contribute Options

This year Team Online Pros Jaime Staples, Mikhail Shalamov, Randy Lew and Lex Veldhuis got the honor of putting forward their choices for Players’ Choice.

Here’s a look at each individual player picked for this year’s SCOOP:

Jaime Staples

Jaime Staples - Progressive KO

"I think my format is going to win. Progressive Knockouts are the future of tournament poker, I believe. It adds a layer of complexity and excitement that starts from the very beginning of the tournament. Also making the tournament slow down towards the end lengthens the 'exciting parts' of the tournament and lets the true players shine. I am pumped to play it!"

Mikhail Shalamov - Win the Button Turbo

"I think this format is great, even when you're not in the hand you get to cheer for other people to win the pot so that you don't have to post the big blind. It's especially interesting when blinds are significant, so turbo format works best."

Randy Lew - Deep Stacks Turbo

Randy Lew
Randy Lew

"I picked NLHE 6-max Deep Stacks Turbo because coming from a 6-max cash game background, I find that the 6-max tables are much more action-heavy and fun.

"I think a lot of times in tournaments we don't get the option of playing with deep stacks like in cash games, so I would love to see more deeper stacked tournaments come into play. A lot of players though, myself included, can get tired after playing for very long hours so I think a turbo format fits very well in allowing us to play with deep stacks but be able to finish the tournament rather quickly.”

Lex Veldhuis - 6-max PLO

Pot Limit Omaha is a great game. There is a lot of depth to it. Even when you're short stacked in tournaments there is a still a lot of room to play. Every street is an all-out war because people can represent so many different hands. If you thought 6-max Hold'em was fun, wait till you see PLO. It's really fun to watch, and I'm proud to champion a tourney like this.”

You can vote for your favorite of the four options by heading over to the PokerStars Facebook page. Voting closes next Monday. The Players’ Choice tournament will close out the 2017 SCOOP on May 22.

PKR Poker Goes Offline Due to Financial Issues

$

Microgaming has suspended operation of PKR Poker.

The company posted an enigmatic statement about the future of the PKR Poker earlier today:

Following a request from PKR on Wednesday 3 May 2017 at 17:32, Microgaming suspended gameplay on PKR.com. Microgaming is aware that their games remain offline and players are speculating about the reason for this. As soon as Microgaming has more information on the situation, it will be shared as soon as possible.

According to the PKR website the company has filed applications to the Court of Administration Orders, which will be heard the week of May 8. Further information for players and creditors will be posted following the hearings.

PKR Pioneered 3D Space for Online Poker

PKR was never one of the biggest online sites but it offered a unique package for players that included three dimensional tables and avatars.

The graphics emulated real-life poker and players were able to customize their avatars’ appearance as well as perform chips tricks and utilize body language to create false tells.

pkr avatar loser closeup
A PKR avatar.

Initially PKR was one of the fastest growing online poker sites and reportedly had 2.4 million users by 2009.

PKR was one of the very few completely independent poker sites, thanks in part to the unique software, but finally made the decision to join the Microgaming network last year.

Surprisingly PKR’s 3D model survived the transition to the Microgaming thanks to the network’s Babelfish platform.

PKR, which is based in Alderney, sponsored a number of professional players over the years including Sofia “welllbet” Lövgren, Patty 'BabyTes' Beaumier, Roman 'Trogvar' Khlan and Marc ‘Waswini’ Bariller.

In 2015, PKR made the decision to drop the sponsored player model altogether.

Here’s the complete statement on the PKR status page right now:

Further to earlier announcements, PKR limited and PKR Technologies Ltd have filed applications to Court for Administration orders, which will be heard in the week commencing 8th May 2017.
Further information will be placed on this website following the hearings.
This information will include contact details for players and creditors to address queries and details of the process.

Over on PokerStars famous poker pros flocked to the latest edition of SCOOP with numerous events paying out over $100,000 for first place.

Meanwhile 888poker held its first $1m-GTD event for XL Inferno with Jayser1337 winning a staggering $140,000.

Finally PartyPoker Powerfest offered a little more value for players thanks to a significant overlay in one of its opening events.

The glut of big-time online series runs until May 22 with some massive tournaments closing out one of the busiest periods of online poker ever. You can take a look at the complete schedule for all three events in our SCOOP/XL Inferno/Powerfest preview.

Here’s a look at a few of the highlights from a busy week of online poker:

Of course the biggest event, by far, was the $25,000 buy-in SCOOP-15-H High Roller, which Russian BIack88 took down for a staggering $702,658.

Another highlight of the week say Fedor Holz snagged the chip lead for the final table of SCOOP-05-H $2,100 PLO. Holz isn’t particularly familiar with PLO but still managed to finish fifth for $47,175.

Charlie “Epiphany” Carrel went one step further.

He accidentally registered for SCOOP-16-H $1,050 PLO 6-Max thinking it was a NLHE tournament. He went on to win the event for $67,410.

PartyPoker Powerfest might just be the most value-packed online series you can play this year.

That meant that players in Event 13 essentially got a crack at $300k in free prize pool money. In the end it was online player jayser1337 who got the biggest benefit as he outlasted all 3,354 entries to win $140,400.

PokerStars Live Reverts to Old Payouts, Overhauls Online Rewards

$
0
0

It’s been a busy week for PokerStars with the introduction of a new position, an old payout structure for live events and a new rewards program for online players.

PokerStars started by announcing Garry Gates as the New Senior Consultant of Player Affairs.

Gates, a poker industry veteran, promptly posted a blog where he talked about how he hopes to serve as a link between the company and players.

In the blog post Gates also mentioned he’s already hosted a Players Advisory Council meeting, which is a first for PokerStars.

The result of that meeting was PokerStars shifting the payout structure back to the old, more top-heavy, 15% for all its upcoming live events. Many big-name poker pros were highly critical of the company when it switched to 20% back in 2016.

Stars Rewards Emulates Video Game “Chests”

The new PokerStars rewards program should be familiar to anyone who plays video games like Overwatch or Hearthstone.

Simply called Stars Rewards, the new program awards randomized chests to players based how many real-money hands they play. The more you play the bigger the chest.

Garry Gates Headshot
Garry Gates

Each chest represents a chance at winning big. There are a variety of potential rewards that could drop in chests including cash, StarsCoin or seats to live events like the PokerStars Championship.

The rewards will be personalized for each player and a tournament player will be more likely receive MTT tickets in their chests.

The program will also have cross-platform functionality so that if you’re a sports bettor with BetStars you could potentially receive a sports-betting reward from your chests.

Players will also be able to acquire boosts, which will double the speed of acquiring chests.

PokerStars plans to roll out Stars Rewards in Denmark later this month with Italy shortly thereafter. Other markets are planned for late Summer.

SCOOP Outage Leads to $105k Freeroll

Earlier this week PokerStars was down during a particularly busy day of SCOOP and the site is going to run a $105,000 freeroll for players who were hampered by the outage.

scoop

The freeroll will run Thursday, May 18, and will award 100 in tickets to a $5m-GTD SCOOP event.

The free tournament is open to anyone who was playing on a scheduled tournament as of 17:00 ET on May 15. That’s one minute before the nearly two-hour outage on PokerStars began.

PokerStars will send an email to all eligible players with an exact time for the freeroll.

Interestingly SCOOP will be extended by one day, next Tuesday, in order to play out the events that were originally scheduled for May 15.

Trueteller Overtakes Ravenswood13 as Online Leader, Cracks $1m

$

Timofey “Trueteller” Kuznetsov and Ravenswood13 have been locked in a battle for online supremacy all year and the Russian just pulled ahead.

Trueteller posted a massive week with over $160,000 in profit according to highstakesDB.

Prior to last night, Trueteller was still smarting from a massive $383k downswing, mostly from battling Ravenswood13.

Trueteller finally got some measure of revenge at the $100/$200 PLO tables on PokerStars last night. The Russian pro spanked Ravenswood to the tune of $125k.

It’s a rarity when these games run so Trueteller made sure to make the most of a willing opponent.

Trueteller on Another Level

For the last month Kuznetsov has simply been on another level when it comes to high-stakes online poker and now sits with a total profit of $1.03 million in 2017.

Carlo van Ravenswoud 3063
Carlo van Ravenswoud

Kuznetsov has nearly doubled the profit of the next most profitable player this year, which happens to be BERRI SWEET with $540,325.

Ravenswood13, the previous biggest winner, now sits in a distant third place with $436k.

It’s been an interesting year for extremely high-stakes online poker as a number of new names have been making their way onto the top earner’s list.

The top 10 includes names like prot0 (+$335k), donthnrmepls (+$313k) and ActionFreak (+$290k).

Of course the list is always fluid and there’s a good chance we’ll see some heavy movement before the end of the year.

One place you won’t see Kuznetsov is the upcoming $300k buy-in Super High Roller Bowl, unless he becomes a late addition.

Kuznetsov finished fourth in the 2015 edition for his biggest ever live cash of $2.1m but he’s not currently listed on the list of confirmed players for the 2017 SHRB.

Dani “supernova9” Stern Plummets Down Rankings

It hasn’t been a great year for Dani “supernova9” Stern on PokerStars.

Dani Stern
Dani Stern

The former 2m2mm star is down $804,381, which is far and away the worst record recorded by highstakesDB this year so far.

On the bright side Stern has $3.6m in lifetime live tournament earnings so he should be just fine.

In other news Dan “jungleman12” Cates has started to emerge from an extended downswing.

Cates bottomed out at nearly -$500k late April but over the last two weeks has managed to improve that number to -$378k.

There’s still a chance Cates will finish 2017 in the black.

What of high-stakes icon Viktor “Isildur1” Blom? He’s essentially even.

Blom usually makes headlines for massive wins (he was the biggest winner last year) and big losses but this year he’s simply holding steady with a minor $27k profit.

The past week was no slouch either with millions awarded on 888poker, partypoker and PokerStars. Noted pros Sam Grafton, Adrian Mateos, Chance Kornuth and Jonas Mackoff all up titles.

The attention now turns to the weekend where all three series will be concluding with Main Events that each guarantee $1m or more.

There will be a little something for everyone with buy-ins ranging from $11 to $10,000. You can check out a comprehensive schedule of SCOOP, XL Inferno and Powerfest right here.

Meanwhile here’s a look at the past week of online poker and a preview of the biggest upcoming tournaments this weekend:

Grafton, Sulsky Snag PokerStars SCOOP Titles

It was a busy week on PokerStars with a gaggle of well-known pros winning titles including Sam Grafton, Ben Sulsky, Jonas Mackoff, Chance Kornuth and Kenny "SpaceyFCB" Hallaert.

Arguably the showcase tournament of the week, however, was SCOOP-30-H a $2,100 NLHE 6-Max event, which featured Adrian Mateos and online crusher Anthony “wwwBTHEREcom” Gregg at the final table.

Mateos has accumulated over $8.1 million in live tournament earnings since 2012 including WSOPE, WSOP and PokerStars Championship High Rollers and added $234k to his bankroll by winning SCOOP-30-H.

Meanwhile SCOOP concludes this weekend with three different Main Events totaling nearly $10m in guaranteed prize pools.

The talk of the week over on partypoker was the gigantic $25,000 buy-in Super High Roller charity tournament and it did not disappoint.

Urbanovich

The event attracted 129 entries and easily smashed the $2m-GTD prize pool to $3.2 million.

partypoker ambassadors Sam Trickett and Joao Simao both made the final table before falling in eighth and fifth place respectively.

Trickett picked up $96k for the deep run while Simao earned $193k.

juanpardo99 went to win the tournament for a staggering $660k but thanks to a heads-up deal Chelsea72 won almost as much ($613k).

partypoker Revamps Rewards Program, Revives Rakeback

$

partypoker is launching a new rewards program that should be welcome news to anyone that ever enjoyed rakeback on the site.

On May 22 partypoker will launch the new program with a simplified rewards structure. Players will earn one point for every $1 they contribute in cash game rake or tournament fees.

Once have accumulated a minimum of 25 points they will start to receive cash back into their account on a weekly basis.

The more points a player generates the more cash they will receive in their account every Monday. The rakeback bonus starts at 20% but scales all the way up to 40%.

A Straightforward Solution

Part of the reason partypoker decided to revive rakeback was to simplify rewards for players.

Patrick Leonard
Patrick Leonard

partypoker Managing Director Tom Waters acknowledged the old rewards scheme was needlessly complicated.

“The new scheme was designed in consultation with a large group of players and I hope that we have delivered a rakeback program that will suitably reward our loyal players,” he said.

One player that’s into the change is partypoker ambassador Patrick Leonard.

“This is a huge improvement for partypoker which I have been championing for a long time,” he said.

“I made sure that all the feedback I received from the poker playing community was passed on to partypoker to ensure we were given a simple and fair reward system that gives players exactly what we are looking for.”

Loyalty Store Closing, Huge Powerfest Weekend

If you liked the old loyalty store on partypoker you have one last weekend to take advantage of a 10% sale in the store.

powerfest2

The loyalty store will close at midnight on May 21 so players would be wise to spend all their remaining points while they still can. On May 22 the store will no longer be available.

Players still have a chance to purchase discounted tournaments tickets to popular events like the Jab, Contender or Uppercut.

It’s shaping up to be a very busy weekend for players on partypoker as the massive online series Powerfest is set to conclude with three different Main Events.

Each Powerfest Main Event carries a $1m-guaranteed prize pool so there will be some enormous prizes up for grabs. You can check out the complete Powerfest schedule here.

It’s been a busy week for online poker with competitors also running massive online series but partypoker has arguably offered the most value with some large overlays in Powerfest.

To say it was a busy weekend on partypoker would be an understatement.

There were a total of four different tournaments offering prize pools of $1m or more and Youtube sensation Doug Polk took down one of them for $271,272.

Polk, who plays on partypoker as gab-tilt99, bought in directly to the final phase of Powerfest 294 for $5,200.

Powerfest 294 had a unique format that allowed players to qualify in earlier stages for far less but still get a crack at the $1m+ prize pool.

In the end Polk outlasted all 274 entries in the final stage to win $271k. It's one of the biggest scores ever streamed and you can check it out below. Here’s a look at the final-table payouts for the tournament.

1. Doug “gab_tilt99” Polk - $271,272
2. PokerG1rl69 - $192,240
3. DeanMlankeo - $145,960

Four Main Events Pay Off Big in Final Powerfest Weekend

Powerfest 294 was just one of many $1m-GTD events on Sunday.

partypoker offered three different Main Events at the buy-in levels of $11, $55, $215 and $1,050.

cash money

Online player starsman1960 outlasted 5,132 to win the $11 Main Event for $6,731 after a two-chop. Not a bad return on an $11 investment.

Meanwhile long-time online grinder joaofera beat 3,309 to take down the $50 buy-in Main Event for $25,795.

The $215 Main Event actually fell slightly short of the guaranteed prize pool of $1m, which meant a slight overlay for players.

partypoker has provided several overlays over the span of Powerfest, making it a fantastic choice for players looking for a little extra value.

In the end online pro sordykrd took advantage of the overlay by outlasting all 4,872 entries to win $153k

Finally Casio “Cassiopak18” Kiles closed out the Powerfest Main Events by beating a 1,590-entry field to win the $1,050 buy-in Main Event for $268,710.

Charlie Carrel Soars to SCOOP-H Main Event Victory for $1.2m

You can add a SCOOP Main Event title to the heady list of poker accomplishments that Charlie Carrel has racked up since he started playing poker a few years ago.

Carrel, who plays online as Epiphany77, outlasted 693 entries in the SCOOP-H $10,300 buy-in Main Event to win $1.2 million last night.

The U.K. native actually had a shot at an even bigger first-prize payout but cut a heads-up deal with Harrison Gimbel that set aside just $100,000 for the winner.

Gimbel, who started the final table as the chip leader, happily collected $1.1 million for his runner-up finish.

Incredibly it was Carrel's second SCOOP title in this year's series.

ROFLshoves Wins SCOOP-M Main Event for $787k

SCOOP has always been known for offering three versions of each event with different buy-in levels.

The Main Event is no exception and Carrel wasn’t the only player to walk away with a huge payday last night.

alrighty then
ROFLshoves' signature Ace Ventura avatar.

Online player ROFLshoves outlasted 5,033 entries in the SCOOP-M $1,050 Main Event to take down a staggering $787,312.

ROFLshoves, who hails from Australia, was dominant at the final table and repeatedly turned down requests for a deal.

Even heads-up against opponent Léo82, ROFLshoves wasn’t feeling the chop.

“I just got a good feeling and I love heads-up,” ROFLshoves typed in the chatbox.

So the pair played out the contest with no deal and a $200,000 difference between first and second place.

It ended up working out for ROFLshoves who finally landed the knockout blow with A-7 over Léo82’s K-9.

“Time for drinks on the beach,” typed ROFLshoves.

madalain Gets Insane Value in SCOOP-L Main Event

The $109 buy-in SCOOP-L Main Event offered one heck of a value proposition.

cash 13314

Despite a relatively low buy-in of $109 the event ended up offering a $2.3 million prize pool thanks to the 23,316 entries.

Austrian online player madalain outlasted them all to win $221,516.

Surprisingly there was no deal in this one either as madalain kept the pedal to the metal.

It paid off in a big way as madalain scooped the entire thing straight-up to get a shiny 2,000% ROI.

That's pretty much it for the 2017 SCOOP with just a handful of events scheduled for today, which were actually re-scheduled from last week because of a PokerStars outage.

Here’s a look at the final-table payouts for SCOOP-L $109 Main Event:

1. madalain (Austria) $221,516.37
2. ale kmkz (Brazil) $161,719.77

See Us, Hear Us: How to Win Back the Recreational Poker Player

$
0
0

We kill 1.2 billion animals a week to fill our bellies.

But we never see these animals outside of a baby’s bedtime story book.

The sterile process that deals with the cull is deliberately invisible because, if it were right in our face, it would create a problem the next time we sat down to eat a freshly fried fillet.

I'm beginning to think the same thing happens in poker. We have all heard tales of the near extinction of the recreational poker player at the fingertips of the professional grinders dominating the food chain.

But have you ever seen a recreational poker player? They don’t appear in my Google Alerts emails on searches for poker. I don’t see their faces on most poker media sites.

There are no names, no faces and no stories. So I started to think they were a myth. A damsel in distress created by online poker rooms as an excuse to improve EBITDA at the expense of customer value.

What the Hell Do They Look Like?

Most online poker rooms offer a two-pronged attack when it comes to a marketing blitz. They either invite you to try their new bells and whistles, or their story is designed to show you why you should choose them over the competition.

Anonymous Heads-Up Tables
Who is the rec player?

But wouldn't it be smarter to begin the journey with the customer? And if that customer is a recreational poker player, then isn't that the place to start saying once upon a time?

Marketing and branding guru par excellence, Bernadette Jiwa, suggests that to start telling better product stories we should:

1. Speak to one person 2. Anchor him in his imperfect reality 3. Show him what his new desired reality could be in the presence of your online poker room.

What she is preaching is 100% pure golden empathy and that creates better experiences for our customers. But the first step is finding a recreational poker player.

What the hell do they look like?

I’m Spartacus! No, I’m Spartacus!

I cried watching that movie.  But I digress. I am a recreational poker player; or more accurately, I was a recreational poker player.

I began playing poker in the pub with my friends because they are boring without something to do. It was all about the money for me. I was a married man with a young son when I began playing. I was deep in debt and couldn't see a way out.

Poker came along and shone a flashlight. It was the easiest way I could make money without putting in any serious mental or physical work.

My priority back then should have been my family. But it wasn’t. I used to scream at my wife that I was playing poker to get us out of debt, but it had become more than debt after a year or so.

It became my community - a way for me to rise through some invisible ranks of hierarchy. Winning felt good. I played online and live and loved them both.

Lee
'Winning felt good'

I was a winner in the live cash games and tournaments. I was a winner in online MTTs. But I was a big loser in the online cash games where I would spend most of my time playing 50c/$1 and $1/$2.

That Was All I Ever Wanted

I focused on cash games because I had a family. Playing tournaments is a sure-fire way to end up in the divorce courts.

I played once or twice a week in a local home game. The game was £1/£1 Dealers Choice (DC) and I wouldn't miss it for the world.

I began playing on partypoker and then Full Tilt. I had a brief stint on PKR, moved to Genting, and then ended up on PokerStars.

I liked PokerStars because the interface was beautifully simple. There were always games and the MTTs were so big I once won $10,000 playing in an $11 buy-in tournament.

The only poker room I ever had any relationship with was PKR. I would email them, and they would email me back, and that was all I ever wanted.

I never felt like a loyal customer, other than at PKR, and that was only because they kept throwing bonuses at me. The only relationship I had with other online poker rooms were the spam-like emails asking me to play some silly game and win a million bucks.

Any one of these poker rooms could have had a loyal customer if I felt seen or heard. I was always interested in the online satellites for the big live events. But it was always a pipe dream to get a seat because the fields were so large compared to the number of available seats, so I never bothered.

I would have liked help with my game, and also some support when I kept losing. A bankroll management tool integrated into the software would have also been very useful for me as well as a way for the site to keep me more informed within the world of poker - a more immersive and entertaining experience.

Poker is boring, after all.

I Never Cared About Rake

My biggest challenges were time to play MTTs and losing at online cash games. Sunday is the big day for poker players but it's also one of two days free from the 9-5 grind if you are a family man.

WillNewPromo
No relationship in all spam.

It's very selfish to use that Sunday to spend 15 hours playing poker before trudging into work with your eyes closed.

I would have liked someone from the company to contact me about my online cash games. Perhaps they could have suggested a new direction, therefore keeping me as a customer.

But, like I said, there was no relationship. So I just left.

I did want to be a professional poker player. I tried once. I failed once. I thought it would be cool. It was also a lazy way to make a living.

I don't care what the pros say about how hard the mental game is; it cannot be harder than working for the British Railroads 72 hours a week or working on the trash trucks.

I never cared about rake. It never interested me. The way I saw it if I wanted to play on a certain site, then I had to pay their dues or go somewhere else.

I don't play today because my values and priorities in life have changed. Playing poker for long periods of time is a waste of my life and those that exist within it.

That’s my story; here are three more.

This is Santiago Garcia Mansilla

Santiago Garcia Mansilla is a 33-year old recreational poker player who lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Santiago is married and has his work cut out because his wife recently gave birth to their first child.

Santiago
Santiago Garcia Mansilla

Santiago is a big poker fan. Of all the hobbies he has, poker is his one pride and joy.

It’s not easy to find time to play, especially now he has a baby, but he finds time midweek and when the baby is asleep.

He always makes sure that his family comes first. His bedtime ritual consists of 45 minutes of poker before the toothbrush comes out.

There is also a live game that Santiago plays in 3 out of 4 weeks/month. There's a pool of 20-25 people and they have a leaderboard and additional prizes for the best players.

Once a year the group head to the biggest casino in South America, The City Centre Rosario, to play in the Grand Finale of the Circuito Argentino de Poker. Last year it had 1,240 entrants, a record for a live poker event held in Argentina.

Santiago prefers playing live because he likes to connect with his friends. The visceral feel of the deck, chips, and money is an important aspect of the game for him. When he plays online he feels divorced from the world and therefore it feels like the rote rhythm of a job.

When he does play online he plays on 888Poker. He will play $1-$5 SnGs, micro-stakes cash games and MTTs with buy-ins ranging between $1-$12.

888Poker gets the nod because the fields are smaller, which makes the games run faster. He likes the structures, late registration rules and can find quality games at any time. Santiago also believes the competition is stiffer on a site like PokerStars.

A Desire to Get Better, Win a Package to WSOP

PokerStars did once have Santiago's business but today he prefers to play on the second largest online poker room on this big blue planet. He would like online poker rooms to offer more satellites to live events coupled with an increase in live events in more parts of the world, particularly Buenos Aires.

Santiago3
Rake is important, but so is experience.

Like myself, Santiago would also like the online poker rooms to help with coaching and believes the ambassadors and team pros could be used to help in this regard.

There is a desire to become a better player, increase his bankroll, learn to play more tables and one day win a package to compete in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event.

The days of becoming a poker pro are behind Santiago. The family life has put an end to his dreams. There is also the fear connected to a career that coexists with so much variance.

Santiago is very knowledgeable about the poker industry. He has read all of the nonsense between Amaya/PokerStars/grinders. He doesn’t know if his games are flooded with pros but he does take note of the better players and tries to avoid them.

He doesn’t use a Heads Up Display (HUD) and believes only pros would use them.

Communication with 888Poker is sparse. He has exchanged emails with them, and used the online chat for deposit information, but believes they could respond quicker to his requests for information.

Rake is important to him, mainly in the live events he competes in as he thinks the online rake is acceptable at his level of play. He loves his poker books and in particular the work of Jonathan Little. He would love to one day compete in a World Poker Tour (WPT) or WSOP event in his hometown.

This is Shane Povey

Shane Povey is in his 30s and lives in Bridgend, South Wales, with his fiancée and two kids. His priority in life is his family and that means a full-time job comes before poker. Shane only plays at night when the children have gone to bed.

ShanePovery
Shane Povey

Shane visits the casino once a month to try his hand at the live game but he much prefers to play online because he can squeeze in far more hands. That’s important to him because he's a winning player and time is of the essence.

PKR is the site where Shane spends his time. He joined them in 2012 after watching an advert on TV marketing the niche 3D software.

“After that, there was no going back,” said Shane.

His game improved by watching the other players he was competing with very closely. Over time he slowly moved up the stakes until he was playing high-stakes MTTs and in 2013 was named the PKR Player of the Year -- something he is very proud of.

Today Shane plays MTTs exclusively with buy-ins ranging between £50-£200. He prefers these stakes because he likes playing against players who know what they are doing.

The Allure of Community

One of the biggest allures for Shane over at PKR is their community. He sometimes plays tournaments on PokerStars but 99.9% of his action is on PKR as he believes they deserve his loyalty after showing him the same.

He wouldn’t change anything about his experience -- he loves the site that much.

Shane would love to one day become a professional poker player as it provides a freedom of time and would allow him to spend more time with his family rather than spending most of his time at work.

The presence of pros in the game doesn't deter Shane. Instead, it spurs him on. Shane believes that it is inspiring to see the PKR pros who not that long ago were in the same situation as him. PKR has shown loyalty in the past to promote within and that is something customers like Shane value.

Shane has never used a HUD and prefers to let his raw game do the talking. He has no concerns about rake, nor does he pay much attention to the rest of the poker world outside his experience at PKR.

PKR3
Povey looking for new home.

Note: I interviewed Shane before the collapse of PKR but went back to him to seek an opinion of the closure. This is what he had to say.

“I was waiting for it to happen,” said Shane. “Unfortunately, after my great years in 2013 and 2014, not long after the site had a 'facelift' where all scheduled tournaments were changed and renamed, etc., the site lost a lot of players.

"The site has changed so much in last three years and those changes have not been good. It's not good news as I spent nearly every night for two years playing on PKR and I enjoyed it. But, those changes completely threw my routine off course. I was then only playing the odd tournament here and there."

So where will Shane take his business now PKR has closed?

“I will play on PokerStars or 888 and hopefully get into a routine on one of those sites.” Shane played on PKR under the pseudonym mrsuperking.

I’m Angus Malcolm

Angus Malcolm is 36 years old and lives in the beautiful countryside of Church Stretton in Shropshire. Angus lives alone and played online poker as a hobby, using his winnings to support his interest in sports betting.

Angus Malcolm

When Angus is not playing poker he works 12-hour shifts for the NHS. When he was playing poker recreationally he would try to qualify for live festivals via online satellite qualification on both PokerStars and the iPoker Network.

Angus loves playing live poker but prefers online because his nearest casino is a 90-minute drive. Angus spent his time playing Sit 'n' Go's and MTTs and would try to qualify for higher buy-in events via the satellites and steps programs.

He would feel uncomfortable playing above $50 without using satellites. He would also play cash games up to $100 buy-in, preferring Speed/Zoom style games.

While Angus spent some time playing on PokerStars he was savvy enough to understand that there are easier games on other sites and spent most of his time playing on the iPoker network.

“I liked the rakeback and rewards and there were more fishy players," said Angus.

I asked Angus how the online poker rooms could provide more value and he said, reduce rake. One of his primary challenges playing online as a recreational player was the amount of pros in the game. Couple this with the high rake and he believes it becomes a difficult challenge for a recreational player to win money consistently.

"Rake is too high and that means 99% of players over their lifetime will struggle to make a profit in poker," said Angus.

Rakeback matters.

There was a time when Angus would have liked to play poker professionally but he believes he has too many gambling leaks. He gave it a shot in 2011, for six months, but called that time 'a monumental failure.' He admitted that he was also drinking too much alcohol at the time.

Today, Angus spends his time working on his sobriety. He told me that not drinking has created more self-awareness and believes if he hired a coach he would have a good shot at making it in the game now his life is so different. But poker doesn't align with his decision to live a more meaningful life.

“My interest in poker has gone,” Angus told me.

Angus did try using a HUD a few years back but stopped as he believed they were more beneficial to cash game players. When asked about the effectiveness of online poker room marketing, he said:

“It’s all about sales, bonuses and getting you to deposit more money. Any correspondence I always send to spam.”

Angus was very switched on when it came to his knowledge of poker. He had read every book in print and kept pace with current news. Although Angus doesn’t play poker today, he wouldn’t put other people off playing the game.

“Play poker as a hobby and get a real job to pay the bills,” said Angus. “Only 1% of poker players will ever make enough to provide a good living. The other 99% are paying for the 1%, and the companies' rake!"

A Plea for Better Poker Stories

Do you remember those three questions from earlier?

1. Speak to one person 2. Anchor him in his imperfect reality 3. Show him what his new desired reality could be in the presence of your online poker room.

I have just spoken to three people and chipped in myself. All four of us were anchored in our imperfect reality. Now it’s time for the online poker rooms to come and get us. Show us what our desired reality could be in the presence of your greatness.

1. Provide us with bankroll assistance

2. Provide us with a reasonable rake

3. Provide us with a realistic path to live events

4. Provide us with a community

5. Understand that offering poker players sports betting and casino solutions under one wallet isn’t always good value for the players

6. Stop spamming; start talking

7. Teach us to be better players

8. Support us when we lose

9. Continue providing us with games that we can play in the midst of changing nappies and spending time with our loved ones

10. But most of all, see us, hear us. And make us feel like we exist by communicating with us at our level, taking into consideration our imperfect reality.

The 2017 PokerStars Championship Barcelona is primed to be a monster and PokerStars is giving away qualifier tickets for free on Discord.

Launched two months ago, PokerStars’ Discord channel is a new way for the poker site to interact with its community.

The launch was very successful and the channel already boosts a healthy bustling list of users so PokerStars is celebrating by running a freeroll that awards five tickets to the €215 Road to Barcelona ultra qualifier.

All players have to do is register for Discord and join the PokerStars channel and message StarsBot.

Discord a New Platform for Poker

PokerStars is the first major poker site that has ventured forth onto Discord and we wrote in more detail about the service on our Positively Nerd Street blog.

Discord was traditionally used by gamers as a way to host communities. The service works almost like a private forum, with instant messaging, but it also has VOIP capabilities as well.

The PokerStars channel on Discord currently has about 12 text channels with categories like #promotions, #ama_answers, #news_and_announcements and #paddedtiltroom.

Jaime Staples, Chris Moneymaker and PokerStars VP of Corporate Communications Eric Hollreiser have all done AMAs, which are still accessible.

You can find more information about exactly how to qualify for the Barcelona freeroll by logging on to Discord and navigating the feed.

Registration for the PokerStars Discord Barcelona freeroll ends on June 30 so you’ll want to jump on this one ASAP.

Massive PokerStars Championship Barcelona Set for August

Spain has always been a popular spot for poker but in the last few years attendance at Barcelona events in particular has exploded.

Sebastian Malec becomes a millionaire.

Last year Sebastian Malec outlasted 1,785 entries in the final European Poker Tour Main Event held in Barcelona to take down a staggering €1.1m. It was the biggest Main Event in the history of the European Poker Tour.

Barcelona was also home to some of the biggest Super High Roller events ever hosted on the EPT.

This year the PokerStars Championship is set to debut in the city and it could be bigger than ever.

The 2017 PokerStars Championship in Barcelona will run from Aug. 15-27 with 10 different events including a €4m-GTD National Championship and the €7m-GTD Main Event.

PokerStars currently offers a variety of ways to qualify for the massive festival including Spin & Go’s, Daily Cash Challenges and more but arguably the best way to get in is the Ultra Satellites, which award 50 seats each.

The Discord freeroll will award five seats into an Ultra Satellite. Snag a seat in the Ultra Satellite and you could be on your way to winning €1m+ in Barcelona.

This year the $5,300 buy-in Main Event will offer a guaranteed prize pool of $5m and there will also be a $1,000 side event with a $1m guarantee.

The 2017 CPP will take place Nov. 18-25 at the five-star Melia Caribe Tropical in Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic.

The $10k CPP leaderboard packages will be divvied up with one package going to the low leaderboard winner, two to the medium and five to the high leaderboard every week.

Outside of the CPP leaderboard there are numerous satellites for the massive live event currently running on partypoker.

Remember: Opt-in for Rake Back

There are plenty of reasons to play on partypoker right now but perhaps the most appealing is the newly announced rake back.

Sam Trickett
partypoker ambassador Sam Trickett.

partypoker revamped its loyalty program in May to offer a simple cash back structure.

It’s one of the most straightforward loyalty programs offered by an online poker site and you can earn up to 40% rake back every week.

All you have to do is play real money poker on partypoker and you’ll start earning towards getting some cash back.

Players earn at the rate of one point per every $1 they contribute to cash game rake or tournament fees. Earn a minimum of 25 points and you’ll start to receive cash back to your partypoker account.

Perhaps the most important party of the loyalty program, however, is remember to opt-in.

Only those who opt-in for rake back every week will be eligible to earn cash back.

To learn more or start earning cash back for yourself you can head over to our partypoker review.

Sweden, Canada, UK Teams Chosen for 888poker 8-Team Event

$

The call went out to poker players around the world and slowly but surely players have begun to take sides in 888poker’s special 8-Team promotion for the 2017 WSOP Main Event.

Online player ‘anteen’ will join 888poker ambassadors Sofia Lövgren and Martin Jacobson on Team Sweden.

Meanwhile ‘tcavallin’ will rep Canada alongside 888poker’s Parker “TonkaaaaP” Talbot and Griffin Benger.

Finally “KYSERBILLS” will fly the Union Jack with Chris Moorman and William Kassouf in Las Vegas.

We’re still awaiting the announcements for Team Germany and Team Brazil to complete their respective three-player squads.

Free $12,500 2018 Main Event Package

Online players on 888poker have been attempting to qualify for the 8-team over the last couple months on the site’s exclusive WSOP satellites. Now that the qualifiers have come to an end it’s only a matter of time before the final two online qualifiers are named.

Dominik Nitsche IMG 2864
Who will join Dominik?

Every player who plays the 2017 WSOP Main Event on one of the three-person 8-Team squads will have the added benefit of getting advice from both the 888poker ambassador and official wingman for their team.

In addition the qualifier who’s on the team that performs the best in the Main Event will receive a $10,000 seat into the 2018 WSOP Main Event along with travel expenses, accommodations and more.

Dominik Nitsche and footballer Mario Basler will act as the ambassadors for Team Germany in the 8-team promo while Bruno Politano and footballer Danilson will represent Team Brazil.

Every online qualifier that made it onto an 8-team squad received a $12,500 package into the Main Event that covers accommodation and travel expenses.

Aiming for a $10m First-Place Prize

Of course if any 888poker qualifier is able to outright win the 2017 WSOP Main Event they get the biggest perk of all.

Qui Nguyen Heads Up
An extra $2m would have been cool.

888poker will add a bonus payout of whatever it takes to get the top prize to $10m.

If you extrapolate Qui Nguyen’s $8m win in the Main Event last year that means 888poker would throw in a bonus $2m.

The time for WSOP qualifying may be over but anyone on the site looking to qualify for a fun live tournament experience may want to look into the upcoming 888Live festival in London, which is set to take place July 27-30, just after the Main Event.

888poker's live event in Barcelona in May smashed its guarantee so there's a good chance London will be a big one.

Satellites are already running on 888poker and you can learn more or sign up for an account (and $888 bonus) on our review page.

$22 Las Vegas Poker Party Quarter-Finals run daily at 4 pm BST and award $109 tickets to all those in the money. Between five and 25 $109 tickets are guaranteed in each one.

If $22 is still to rich, though, you can start way down at the $0.01 and $5.50 satellites, which may take a little longer but certainly ease the bankroll pressure.
